Thanks for sharing this. I was so happy to stumble on this post. My longest runs tend to be marathons but I'm fascinated by fueling strategies. I have SO much to learn.
That looks like such a handy tool. I was lucky with Tarawera that there were esitmates for quickest times between aid stations. So I used a combination of previous splits and the race estimates. But your tool looks great for other races and individualised estimates
Great to see what it’s like for someone at the front of the pack. By the time you had finished, I’d only walked to Fenton Mill. The difference between speed and endurance and just endurance. Your speed meant you could work with pretty much handheld equipment, I weighed my hydration pack at the end, I was carrying 4kg.
Do you ever use poles? I actually found them useful from Okataina onwards (should’ve had them out for the slippery section coming towards Okataina too.
I use poles for courses with more vert. But yea I think if you're walking let's say at least 30 percent of the race or you get used to even jogging with them then they can be really helpful. Especially for the hills
Thanks for sharing the plan! Did you base your in-race nutrition on aid station spacing, or did you adjust due to your faster pace? Were you aiming for carb intake per section or per hour?
Hey Nills, thanks for your question. I knew I was a head of pace and therefore hitting higher carbs pr hour than my plan. But because I was coping I decided to push on and stick with the plan I already had in place. In saying that, I was ready to adjust as needed

Thanks Jim, I'm really glad you enjoyed.

I love this, how do you build your plan? I created a tool that you might like for this, timeontrails.com

Hey Glennis,
Congrats on your race.

Genuinely such a good read; love seeing logistics.
Hey cheers Liam
